De-Stress The Day After Thanksgiving!

Today, let's focus on your Trapezius muscles. Right where your neck and shoulders meet. Knead your shoulders many times during the day- here's why- at different times of the day, your shoulders will feel more or less tense, depending on the situation. If you are shopping and waiting in line, your shoulders may be more tense than if you are at home, watching your favorite show on television while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate or coffee or tea. Notice, as you knead (just like kneading bread) your shoulders, if any tension refers into your neck to the back of your head or into your neck to your jaw, or between your shoulder blades. Wherever it goes, follow it with your focus. Relax.

Awesome session- Myofascial Release and Talking

This was the firsttime that I did ONLY Myofascial Release with this client, I usially pair it with deep tissue therapy. This client has pain in the sacrum and low back, which for a long time, scared them because they didn't know what to do about it. I saw mu client and their spouse a few weeks ago and their spouse thanked me for helping my client. That never happened before, and time stopped when they thanked me.
For this session, I focused on Myofascial Release for the legs and arms and the back if the head. We talked and the talking was, much like the last session, more talking than laughing, there was laughter, and the laughter was more lime the laughter of recognition as we talked. After the session, they had no pain. Thank You God for
my AMAZING clients!!!!

Client came in stressed, aftrer massage was relaxed and calm

My client came in today stressed from recent events in their life. We talked throughout the massage. The talking was more like just talking than laughing and joking. I did Myofascial Release. At the end of the massage, my client was relaxed and focused, ready to take on the rest of my client's day.  More clear, more focused, relaxed, feeling that they can take on the world.

Foot Pain Gone today

My client had pain in their right foot. They said that it felt like Plantar Fascitis. They have had that before. After 20 minutes if Myofascial Release to the toes and feet, they had no pain.

A session at the office.... This is what it's like!

My client arrives. Tired from a long day of work. We talked and laughed for a while, we both joked around for a bit, then talked about life and then silence as my client started to go to sleep. At this point, I focused on MyofSxial Release and Guided Meditation.
After the massage, the client came out of the office wearing pajamas thT they has brought with them. We talked for a bit, and then it was back home to sleep for my client.
That was my last massage of the day.
Thank You God for my AWESOME clients!

Thank you, God, for my AMAZING clients!!!!

Every session is always different. The conversation, laughing, or when the client simply needs to sleep.
Every session is amazing because everyone is different, every life is different, every story is different.
Each one of you is amazing, you make my day!
Thank You God for my AMAZING clients!!!!

My passion for Massage Therapy

My passion for massage is the stress relieving aspect. I work on pain as well, I find it's amazing how stress can cause pain, when we hold onto stress, it can make the shoulders feel tense, as well as rhe neck. The low back is a common area for when we feel that we are carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders.
I love the aspect of relaxation, because I think that it's easier to be stressed than it is to relax- or at least, it can seem that way.
Do you ever find that when you are at work, you can't wait to get home, and when you're at home, you can't stop thinking about work? And then the thought, "Life should be easier than this", and it is. Get away for an hour. Massage is wonderful for relaxation.

What is Forward Head Syndrome? (In English, how we sit at the computer or when we drive

As we sit at the computer or when we drive, we are no longer focused on how we are sitting, we are now focusing on what we are reading or typing, or where we are driving.
Did you know that for ever inch forward that the head moves as we sit, it adds 10 pounds to the weight of the head on the neck? Not only that, when we sit straight, the spine supports the weight of the head. However, as the head moves forward like in Forward Head Syndrome, the muscles in the neck have to support the weight of the head.
Forward Head Syndrome has been linked to Carpal Tunnel, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and Lower Back Pain.
Always see your doctor first to determine if massage therapy is right for you.

Sciatica- I am going to focus on Periformis Syndrome

There are many different causes for Sciatica, here I am going to focus on Periformis Syndrome.

Before anything, if you have concerns that you may have Sciatica, the most important thing is to see our doctor to be sure that it is being caused by muscle instead of something else, like a herniated disc, for example.

Some questions to ask yourself are:

do I sit for long hours each day?
Do I keep my wallet in my back pocket and am I having pain on that side as well?
Do I get enough exercise?
How long have I been having this discomfort?
Does the discomfort refer down the back of the legs and possibly the calves as well?
Have I gone to my doctor to make sure that it is not a herniated disc?
After answering these questions, depending on the results, it may be a wise choice to consider massage therapy.

What is Lumbago (In English, low back pain)

Lumbago is a term describing general low back pain and many times the exact cause is unknown (In medical language, idiopathic).
The most important thing, if you have low back pain, is to see your doctor and ask if massage therapy can help.
Some symptoms that you may feel when you have Lumbago (low back pain) are:

Pain in the low back that does not radiate down into the legs. If the pain radiates down into the legs, then it may not be simply low back pain, I will put a post up about Sciatica in a moment.

Also, the pain may be achy, or it may be a sharp pain. There may be muscle spasms on either side if the back.

You may feel that your back is tight in the mornings, and then throughout the day, it may relax.

There are things that can cause Lumbago, however the only way to know for sure is by getting testing done.

For example, there may be a herniated disc- and you will not know this until you get testing to be sure- It may be just muscle strains- do you stretch regularly, do you get enough exercise?

What to do when one hip is higher than the other when it looks like one leg may be longer than the other

I have found Myofascial Release to be wonderful for this.
My client's hips were even after the treatment today.
I remember the first client that I ever helped their hips to be even. They needed to wear an insert in one of their shoes to even them out. After the session, they left their insert on the table and wrote on it, "Thank you"! I will never forget it.
Myofascial Release is a gentle, and powerful treatment.

Things you should know about Cervicalgia (In English, neck pain)

Facts about Neck Pain
  • Neck pain is also known as cervicalgia in the medical world.
  • Neck pain occurs around your cervical spine area, which is your neck, and all of these muscles support your head.
  • The cervical spine is made up from seven vertebrae (seven small shock-absorbing discs which piled up on top of each other, and are kept together by ligaments and muscles.
  • Neck pain is common, however most of the sufferers do not seek care.
  • One out of three people have had cervicalgia in the previous year.
  • More than 50 percent of people will suffer from neck pain some time in their life.
  • Most of neck sufferers get better within several weeks, this depends on many factors, how long the neck pain has been present especially.
  • Keeping yourself active is the best way to avoid neck pain.

  • Most common causes of neck pain include awkward sleeping or resting positions and pulling or reaching movements.
  • Poor sitting postures, for example bend over forward can lead to discomfort feeling in the pain, also forward head posture, which is how we sit many times when we are at the computer.
  • Long-term neck pain problems may happen because of discomfort is continuing over a period of time and nothing is done to correct it or  the pain can develop suddenly, like from a car accident.
  •  Ask your doctor if massage therapy may be right for you, to help with your neck pain. Always see your doctor first.

One of my AMAZING clients!!!! And, how to find your demographic

One of my clients is going to school for massage therapy. Another one of my clients asked this client what their favorite technique is. They said, "I like Aradia's technique because she talks, there are clients who come in and say, "I just really want to get a massage and be quiet", and then I'm thinking "But I want to talk! I have so much to say! And I'm quiet so they can relax".
This is so cute, and it also speaks of what demographic that is chosen to work with. How cool is that? And, how important, INTEGRAL is that? We must choose a demographic that we want to work with. How do we do this? Who are your friends? What do they believe about being healthy? How many massages do they get each month? Why do they believe so strongly in the benefits of massage? That may be a great way to figure your demographic if you are a massage therapist, and just substitute what you do for massage therapy to figure who your demographic may be.

An awesome session- some results from a session using my favorite technique- Myofascial Release

My client started coming in for treatments after a car accident. My client called me a few days after the car accident. This is the first time I have ever worked on someone so soon after their car accident, so I am so happy to say that the results have been absolutely AMAZING, and if you, God forbid, are in a car accident, please ask your doctor if they think that massage therapy will help.

I have been working with this client for exactly one month. When this client first came to see me after the accident, they could not move their head very easily, instead of being able to turn their head from side to side, which seems like something that is so natural that we don't think about it until we have to deal with it, they could only turn if they turned their entire body from side to side.
Now they have full range of motion.
It was so cute, in one of their sessions, because with Myofascial Release, what I notice with my clients, is that after a bit of therapy, they become so relaxed that they laugh and joke. In this session, I said, "Here is a good point, this is an intersection of a few muscles". I'm totally into this treatment, talking my client through what I'm finding and asking where there are referrals, so I can be in full communication so the treatment is perfect. It was so funny- my client said, "Is there a traffic light"? We both laughed and laughed!
I LOVE massage therapy! It is so fun!!!!
There is a saying, "If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life". I absolutely love what I do!
Thank you, all my AMAZING clients!!!!

My clients text me when they are in pain, I explain what they can do to make it go away

I'm telling my clients to "Text me if you have any pain", and I follow up with texts asking them how they are doing. Sometimes I will get a text saying "My back is tight", I will Remember their last session and give them techniques so that they can work on themselves to alleviate the pain. I ask them to text me back when they have done the work and let me know how they feel. Either the pain will be completely gone, or it will have moved, in which case I will walk them through that. It is a very effective way to help, and it works.

The difference I see in my clients with Neuromuscular Therapy VS Myofascial Release

Neuromuscular Therapy is really cool, really precise. What I notice is a lot of relief of pain, it's amazing how many muscles are affected by stress- we hold it in the shoulders and the neck, primarily, when it's stress. I notice my clients are very happy with the results, I have a client who says, "When you work on me, I can feel the pain go, there is a point when it goes, and it is relaxing and I am never in pain after the massage", Sometimes, when doing Neuromuscular work, there is discomfort the next day, it depends on many things- when was the client's last massage, what is the client's preference on pressure- this is really important. I have clients who have many trigger points and in applying a lot of pressure to the trigger points, they asked for lighter pressure, and with the lighter pressure pressure, the trigger points released, where if I just used the deep pressure, they would have been uncomfortable, and would not have been able to relax.

With Myofascial Release, it's so gentle, and it's so effective. It has a powerful effect- instead of just simply working with trigger points, Myofascial Release works with the entire body. For example, I have a client who, I. The beginning, had a lot of neck pain. As I held the stretch for Myofascial Release, it referred to my client's shoulders and between the shoulder blades. There was another session in which my client had pain at the sides of the ribs, and it was being referred by the fascia in the neck- there was another time in which my client had pain in the Legs and with Myofascial Release, found that it was being referred from the neck!

I think both techniques are highly beneficial, and I use both on my clients with awesome results! I thank God and I thank my teachers.

"Relax, allow yourself time to relax"...

With the hustle and bustle of life, and especially with the holidays, it gives us one more reason to focus on everything and everyone else but us, and that is a good thing because we get things done, however, when is it going to be time for you to relax?
A massage is wonderful because it is only an hour and a half- I generally take an hour and a half per massage. I charge for an hour, I take an hour and a half. There is so much to talk about! My clients and I talk before, during and after the massage.
It's important not to spend too much money, and to also be able to take care of your body, because this is the same body that you are going to have many years from now. The most important thing is to be strong, and an important component in being strong in life is to allow time for relaxation, to talk, to laugh.
You are important, just as important as everyone you know and love, so when someone is stressed, what do you tell them? Do you take your own advice? You are amazing, and so powerful! Live life to the fullest!

"Remember what you are here to do" This saying is a pattern now in my practice

This saying is what comes to me while doing sessions lately.
How about you? Do you remember what you were born to do? Do you remember your mission in life? You are here to do big things, you are AMAZING!

    Statistics for Massage Therapy

According to the 2009 AMerican Massage Therapy Association Consumer Survey, an average of 22% of adult Americans received at least one massage between July 2008 and July 2009, While an average of 34% of adult Americans received massage in the previous FIVE years!

Everything in parenthesis is my comments:

Of the people who had at least one massage in the last five years, 31% report they did so for health conditions such as pain management, injury rehabilitation (I suggest always see your doctor first to get the appropriate tests so that a diagnosis can be made), migraine control (I suggest seeing your doctor first for this as well to determine if there is a cause or if it is idiopathic, knowledge is power, or overall wellness (this can be for improved circulation, improved immunity and relaxation- I also believe that talking is an essential element in massage when the client wants to talk, it's amazing how talking can relax the mind which allows you to relax even more).

Massage Therapy is an important element in health and wellness (It's also important to see your doctor).

86% agree that massage can be effective in reducing pain.
85% agree that massage can be beneficial to health and wellness.

In July 2009, 39 million adults (18%) have discussed massage therapy with their doctors or healthcare providers, compared to 13% in 2008. Of those 18%, 35% of their healthcare providers strongly recommend massage therapy, compared to 27% in 2008.
While physicians led the way in recommending massage- 55% in 2009 vs. 50% in 2008, and chiropractors 48% in 2009 vs. 47% in 2008, and physical therapists 42% in 2009 vs. 40% in 2008, also recommended massage therapy when their patients discussed it with them.

Cool! I love that more and more, massage therapy is being recommended, and not only by healthcare workers, the majority of my clientele is word of mouth. 95% is word of mouth.

Very Important- Injury Information- What To Do

So, whatbis the best thing to do when you have an injury? If you have strained or sprained your hamstring muscles or your calf muscles, for example.
First of all, do you know the difference between a sprain and a strain?
A sprain is an injury to a ligament.

    Sprain severity:

Grade 1 Sprain- causes over stretching or slight rearing of ligaments with no joint stability.
Grade 2 Sprain- causes partial tearing of the ligament.
Grade 3 Sprain- results in complete tear or rupture of ligament.

A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon.

Grade 1 Strain- only some muscle fibers have been damaged.
Grade 2 Strain- more extensive damage to muscle fibers, muscle not completely ruptured.
Grade 3 Strain- Typically requires surgical repair of muscle.

The most important thing to do in these cases is to see your doctor. Your doctor may recommend that you get an M.R.I., depending on the severity of the injury. Once your doctor has given you a diagnoses, it is easier to know what to do from there. Knowledge is power.

If you don't think it's important to see your doctor, consider that you may be dealing with residual pain and discomfort for months after this, or even years, if this is not taken care of. This is your body. This is extremely important.

As a massage therapist, I cannot diagnose, it is extremely important to take care of your body.

Stress and how I see that it affects my clients

I find that a client is stessed, there are a few things involved- they have tension because their life is stressful and it is causing them to hold stress, many times I will find a trigger point, and although I found many other trigger points and worked them out, we have been talking and laughing the whole time, and then I will find a trigger point that is the one that has been causing great discomfort, and as soon as I work on it, they become silent and go to sleep.
At the end of the massage, they feel so much better. It's amazing how we hold onto stess.

Stress and how it affects my clients

What I see most commonly is that my clients hold stress in their neck and shoulders. Many times, when my clients are stressed, their breathing is affected. Their breathing is more shallow. More labored. The Scalene muscles are tight. The Scalene muscles attach at the first and second vertebrae and on the first and second rib.
Many of my clients sit at their computers many hours each day for work, so not only are their neck musles tight, so are the muscles between the shoulder blades, called the Rhomboids, and their Trapezius muscle, Latissimus Dorsi, Rotator Cuff muscles( There are 4 for watch shoulder).
Sometimes when my clients come in for their session, they just need to talk, and I find that talking actually works wonderfully along with the massage, because it helps to relax them.
This is the first of a series that I am writing about how I see that stress affects my clients. Your input is important- what do you think about this blog? Thank you!

Can the Scalene muscles produce rotation in the cervical spine? In English, can the scalene muscles bring the vertebra in the neck out of alignment? Here's a link to a study

This is a very informative article about foam rollers. It teaches about how to do these stretches on your own. Would you like me to sell foam rollers at my office?

    Awesome session!!!!

God, thank You for this beautiful day! For my session today, I played the CD that I recorded with Jim Thornton, it's a relaxation CD. It made the whole session just so amazing, meditative. Let me' know if you would like me' to play the CD for your next session. :)

You can sit at the computer all day and have good posture:)

I read an awesome blog yesterday that takes about putting a tennis ball between your upper back and the chair that you are sitting in, so that each time that you forget to sit up straight, the tennis ball will fall! What an awesome idea! Have you tried this?
